The Needle's Eye is a natural rock formation on the sea shore of picturesque Tarlair Bay a few miles east of the village of Macduff on the Moray Firth. It is easy reached by car from Macduff by following the coast road (as opposed to the inland road) out of the village. The bay also contains a now unused open air sea water swimming pool and small play park. We had a picnic in our car and then had a good time clambering about the rocks and exploringthe rock pools. The arch is not accessable at high tide if you want to stay dry.

The Needle's Eye structure is made of metamorphic rock of Cambrian age. These rocks were originally sediments deposited in an ocean in the region of 600 million years ago and one interesting feature of them is that despite their long geological history you can still see relicts of some of the original sedimentary structures in them.
