The Prop of Ythsie (pronounced "icy") is stone tower on top of a hill just outside the village of Tarves.
When driving about rural Buchan as we do a lot, you can't miss this landmark. There is a small car park at the bottom of the hill and a sign-posted path to the Prop. It is a good walk up to the Prop and once you reach the top, and crossed the field (watch out for bulls), the Prop is pretty impressive up close. You can climb the dark, and bird mess caked stair to the castellated viewing platform at the top and the views are well worth it.
An inscription indicates that the Prop was built by the tenants of Haddo estate in memory of George Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen who made a great number of improvements to Haddo House, the estate and the quality of life of his tenants.
