A Very Short Guide To Walling! Dry Stone Walling is not a Jigsaw ... there is no right answer. Every waller will use the stone available in a different way. Don't try to build quickly, try to build for strength. Speed comes with practice. Below are listed some basic rules of the job:- If you click a link you should see an illustration of the point * The rule of thumb is that the wall's base width should be half that of its height * Build two faces, with an infill of the smaller and less good stone. Pack the middle tight * Put the biggest stone in the bottom to act as a firm footing ... get it solid * Cover your Joints - always try to place one stone over two * Try to "batter" your wall ... taper the width so that at the top it is about 16"-18" or 40-45cm * Try and get stones in the two faces of the wall to lean out, so as to shed any water that gets in * If you have some stones that are long enough to reach from face to face, use them to tie the faces at half height * Top your wall in some manner ... maybe "toppers" or if you are feeling extravagant, a sawn stone coping Enjoy your Work !
